Felt this hard! I’ve been working against this urge since my wedding in 2019. I did no new buying for 2 years, through a pregnancy and only managed to buy new maternity pants. I’m now in a place where my life got devoid of small joys and I actually felt quite low about it. So now I’m kind of stumbling around trying to find the balance in the middle. I absolutely adore the way you word the things we all feel!!
why is the marketing strategy among young, women consumer brands all "are you hot? are you cool? because hot and cool girls buy our products." why is this upsetting but not surprising? why does a strategy based on shallowness so effective with women who are so educated and aware? i've been grappling with these questions for the past several weeks after i saw crowds of women standing in line outside in the cold of the sezane store in nyc. how has the culture sold us conflicting narratives to be "not basic" but also "you need this if you are a living breathing woman." this essay really captures the answer to this. i buy makeup and clothes but everyday i wake up too tired to put makeup on and to curate an outfit that's not a white t-shirt and jeans (and not in the i'm a cool french girl who effortlessly throws on a white t-shirt and jeans and looks hot way.) i have the exact same clothes and makeup as the people i admire on the internet but why don't i feel the way i'm told i should feel?
i bought a trench coat at sezane to add to my jacket collection that i've built as a girl who lives in texas :)
