An online workshop on female confessionality
Between the female self used as an instrument -a way of seeing class, desire, art, power that transcends the “I”- and the female self used as content, offered for consumption on the premise of relatability, it’s not always easy to tell the difference. Or understand where one ends and the other begins.
I attempt to do just that in my latest essay, which you can read here:
The essay only goes so far, chained by limitations like word count and attention span, so I’d like to invite you to an online lecture/workshop I’m hosting Sunday, July 26. Anchored in the works of Annie Ernaux and Chris Kraus, with the eye on the ever-evolving “personal essay” genre, the discussion will go into what confessional really means as a label, “did the journal factory explode” and why preserving interiority as a woman writer might sometimes be more pleasurable - and more sovereign.
It’s a continuation of the themes already explored in the essay, but in a more playful/honest/conversational setting where we also get to chat, reflect, and ask each other questions. We’ll wrap up with two exercises to help you locate your own confessionality and understand your relationship with it. No writing experience needed! Curiosity required.
